A Week's Game of Tag

Days-of-the-Week Tagathon I had a lot of fun with this past week's #EME6414 Twitter Days of the Week Challenge .  Did you try it? What did you think?  What were your expectations? I can say that I was a wee bit intimidated. Somehow, Twitter intimidates me--and yet, when I get into it, it's fine. It's like jumping into a lake--opaque and cold on the outside. But then you dive in, and you warm up, and it's not just fine but rather fun.   It was kind of like a weeklong race--and really fun to search out my fellow #EME6414ers' day-of-the-week tweets. Especially fun with the push notifications turned on.  Nothing like a little social-media buzz to pick you up in the middle of a (#really) long week. I did end up tweeting some belated days-of-the-week. #FollowFriday on a Saturday morning? I had to cringe-tweet that--but off it went.

A Rainy Fourth of July

Technically the Fourth of July is over, but fireworks are still blasting away in pockets across town. There's more at stake this year, those blasts are saying--more to celebrate, more to release. (As I type, a sonicky boom just went off, somewhere to the west.)  It was rainy today. There was lightning, thunder. But we still did some Fourth of July things--not all of them, but some. (Sparklers, veggie dogs, fresh corn,  National Treasure , flags.) Before the storm, I got out a new Bosch drill, and drill bits I've had for years.  Years .  I shipped these drill bits back to the US from Rome in a cardboard box (filled with other things, too--books, linens, kitchen detritus, clothes). The plastic cylinder the drill bits live in still has its price-tag, which is inscribed with the name of a little local hardware store that still exists on Via Celimontana, in Rome. (I googled it.) Cheugy

  Do you know what "cheugy" means? When and how did you find out?  I wonder why every generation seems to have its own word for basically the same idea. Where does this need come from, to create a new word to put a finger on the same feeling?  Kitschy, chintzy, tacky, schmaltzy, cheesy, corny.  Variations on the same general idea?  A velour Juicy tracksuit by any other name would be just as ___________.  You fill in the blank, depending upon your generation. (Said from someone who had more than a few Juicy tracksuits, back in my Y2K day.)  Cheugy. Pronounced chew-GEE. (With a hard G, as in gross--another word we sometimes used for tacky, back in my day.) If you're curious,  this article in the New York Times  breaks down the particular nuances of cheuginess.  You say cheugy, I might say cheesy. But aren't these qualifiers still all in the same extended, hyper-American family? (Like cross-generational, cross-cultural linguistic cousins.) ...
