Everything We Touch: A Pinterest Reflection Board

On Friday, I ran across this story on NPR, on Paula Zuccotti's "Lockdown Essentials" social-media-based project.

I can't remember where I stumbled upon the story--Twitter or Instagram?--but I googled the project's curator and creator, Paula Zuccotti, an ethnographer, industrial designer, and "future archaeologist."

Check out Zuccotti's work here on Instagram, on her website, and on Vimeo.

Zuccotti collected digital still lifes via a call on Instagram -- last year, Zuccotti invited anyone in the world to share their personal "15 lockdown essentials" by tagging a photo with the hashtag #EveryThingWeTouchCovidEssentialsx15.

You can find Zuccotti's curated and "catalogued" picks on lockdownessentials.org

Before stumbling across the NPR story, I had already fleshed out a (private) Pinterest board called "Pandemic Things." So, thinking about and inspired by Zuccotti's "time capsule," I went back and did the maximalist's version on Pinterest. (The Pinterest aesthetic invites maximalism--my 60-something "essentials" are definitely not Zuccotti's 15.)

The board is free and open to the world--if you're curious, you can find it here on Pinterest.

Here's a close up from the (60-something) "essential" objects:

Which objects would you include in your own personal "lockdown essentials" time capsule? Which objects would make Zuccotti's 15-object cut? Let me know in the comments! I'd love to hear from you.

  1. This is such a cool idea and I love that you got inspiration and made your own! Animal Crossing for sure! I remember when there was nothing to do and Nintendo switches were sold out. That game will always give me a pandemic feel! I love your board! I think your blog illustrates how we can use web 2.0 tools to come together during hard times and share resources and things that make us happy and how we can build an online community across far distances.

    1. Hi Lissa! Thank you so much for the comments and kind words! ACNH, yesss!! The opening theme song will forever transport me back to this pandemic year, in a happy way, as you say. Animal Crossing was such a source of comfort. I think it would be really cool to study that community, to see whether or not playing the game offered any kind of emotional resilience. (Because I feel it did, personally!)

  2. Hello!

Thank you for sharing this wonderful curation of resources! It certainly came in handy when I was thinking of what to prep for the projected coming of Hurricane (or Tropical Storm) Elsa! Since it was going to be a 2-3 day event (or so I have been told), I prepped:

    - Enough food and DESSERTSSSS to last me through,
    - Downloaded Netflix movies (in case my Internet went down)
    - 3 x six-packs of Blue Moon beers.

I am ready. Or...as ready as a person who has never experienced a hurricane before can be.

  3. Hi Kelvyn! Thank you so much for the kind words. It's all Paula Zuccotti--I just love her project. I hope you got through Elsa safe and sound--and had enough desserts, Blue Moon, and Netflix queued. (You did good with the prep!)
